Highlighting Services to Build Web Credibility

October 26th, 2010 by Cameron Madill Leave a reply »

“This was the first time since having a website that the Board of Directors admitted to being proud of it.” We were delighted with what Martha Wright of Friendly House, an organization that provides many critical services to families and individuals in need, had to say about the web design work we  did for their website.

She also said that after the launch of the new website, employees of Friendly House were significantly more engaged and participated on the site more than in the past, an effect that has led to better service for their patrons.

When asked what she thought was the best change in the new website, she didn’t hesitate to explain that it was the display of exactly what they do and their services on the main page. Less people are confused about services and also how to go about contacting them, thanks to the ‘Contact Us’ page that was also redone. The better functionality and organization has resulted in a great resource for the people they help as well as their own employees.

Not surprisingly, you can see a couple of the Stanford Web Credibility Guidelines at work here, one being to make it extremely easy to contact you, and the other to highlight the content and services you provide. This makes it clear exactly what you do and additional links to a track record or proof of expertise in those services adds credibility to the site. A website’s credibility is everything, if no one can understand what you do, it makes it hard for them to trust you to provide.

Provide easy contact information and means, as well as a simple, highlighted description of product or service and your site will start to look more credible in a flash.

You never know how the message, credibility, and overall personality of your site can make people feel. The new site made it easy to get in touch with real people and convey the warmth and values Friendly House holds dear which made a huge difference in a particular woman’s case. Having felt discriminated at other places, she found the Friendly House website and said, “The compassion I see on the website is compelling and motivating.”

  5. Many website owners do not realize that you only have the first few critical seconds of a user being on your website to say alot of things. Most importantly making it interesting. Once you have their attention then you can bring the user in for more information. Keep in mind that web users are not like newspaper readers. The majority of web users scan sites and dont read them. Because of this it is important to highlight or bold the key points you want to make.

    Great post guys!
